Christmas Memory

There was a Christmas long ago

And I was there and so were you,

And when we gathered by the tree

Joy had had gathered too.

And there were gifts and there was food

And there was laughter and surprise

And you would open gifts of mine

And love was in your eyes.

And on that Christmas long ago

As we sat round the table (square)

We spoke of family and friends

Who were no longer there

To share that Christmas long ago.

And now I wonder whether you

Gather round a tree somewhere

Remembering me too.

Touching. And all so familiar. Thanks for the memories.

It is something so many feel around the holidays, especially as you get older. Today's joys seem inevitably to be qualified by the remembered joys of yesterday. Once there were twenty people gathered for our Christmas, this year there were three. Still joyful, and I am still grateful for it, as I am grateful for the memories of Christmas past. Dickens was right to characterize it as a ghost.

As humans, though, we don't perceive time correctly. Our consciousness rides on the crest of the wave. But the water is still there when the wave is past.

T S Eliot nails it, doesn't he?

Time present and time past
Are both perhaps present in time future,
And time future contained in time past.
If all time is eternally present
All time is unredeemable.
What might have been is an abstraction
Remaining a perpetual possibility
Only in a world of speculation...

Beautiful! I feel the depth of love and affection. Makes me feel melancholy....
