There is a room at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, right next to the famous room with the Monets, that has many paintings by Pissarro. It is my favorite room in the building.

I'm sure it would be mine, too. What an overwhelming experience altogether that must have been! This image, as you may know, is The Hermitage at Pontoise.

I like his rural paintings, but I also like his Paris paintings, like this one:

So evocative.

A magnificent accomplishment, technically more so than the one above, I feel. We can zoom in digitally, but the Paris painting, with all its intricate detail - managed through Impressionism! - demands to be seen in situ. It speaks of anonymity, whereas the rural scene speaks of natural community and is consoling.

Yes there is a completely different feel about it - that is one of the aspects if his work that impresses me - the variety. Plus its just pleasant to look at.

The other room with the Monets was in a movie - The Thomas Crown Affair - the second one. Though my favorite film about a museum heist is How to Steal a Million - Audrey Hepburn and Peter O'Toole. Charming. Though my favorite Audrey Hepburn Movie is Roman Holiday. Which may have ahd a museum in it somewhere.

Inclined to think, though, that canvas will outlast film and digital in memory and in fact.
